Guru Purnima

The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August) is observed as Guru Purnima. It is considered an auspicious time for students to be given initiation by their guru. We are extremely grateful to Swamiji Svavananda for sharing this day with us. We learned a lot and gained new respect for the traditions regarding Guru Purnima. Someone asked me if it was like an Indian celebration of Mother’s or Father’s Day. Yes, it is kind of like that except without all the commercial fake sentimental overtones.

It is a day to honor your spiritual development and reflect on the spiritual teachers who have meant the most to you. Why don’t we have a Guru Purnima day here?It is a great idea…
