Send them love

In the movie The Secret Life of Bees, the beekeeper August Boatwright tells the little girl staying with her that all little beings want to be loved.  She says to send the bees love as a way to avoid getting stung, but the message applies as well to the adolescent girl who lost her mother when she was very young and had been living with her father who seems incapable of loving.

At the end of the movie (I don’t remember this part in the book, so I don’t know if that was changed or I just forgot it), she realizes how her mother’s death might have affected her father. Her empathy with him allows her to forgive him and that forgiveness frees her. He doesn’t change at all, but he can no longer hurt her.
